The culture of IPV

We focus on addressing the epidemic of intimate partner violence on the cultural level.  A lot of how boys learn to be boys and girls learn to be girls, and how they interact—is dictated from mainstream stuff they watch. Yeah, yeah, right? But why should people have to wait until they get into a college sociology class before the concept of deconstructing media enters their minds? We want to show people some other stuff that helps them be a little more critical about what they are fed through popular music; including television, movies, magazines and commercials. Public Spectacle acknowledges the great range of services that exist from laws to support organizations that seek to prevent and address intimate partner violence. What Public Spectacle seeks to contribute to these existing efforts is the crafting of tools, such as our music videos, that can spark dialogue about the damaging and dehumanizing messages that are sometimes delivered through mainstream media. Approaches such as these can reach vulnerable populations such as teens and people in abusive relationships, and can also address and affect the consciousness of the larger culture.
